Book Review: Holiday Romance by Catherine Walsh

My Book Review

RATING: 4 out of 5 Stars

HOLIDAY ROMANCE (Fitzpatrick Christmas Book #1) by Catherine Walsh is a charming, heart-warming holiday rom/com featuring friends in Chicago, who meet every year at the airport for years to fly home to Ireland for the Christmas holiday to be with their respective families, but this tenth year will change everything. This is the first book in this series, and I cannot wait for more.

Molly Kinsella, who cannot be bothered with Christmas cheer and Andrew Fitzpatrick, who is all in for everything Christmas, have become close friends as they meet each year to fly home to Ireland together. They catch up on their extended families and personal lives on the trip each year, but as they wait for their ten-year anniversary flight a stormfront moves in and all planes across the Atlantic are cancelled. Molly knows what Christmas with family means to Andrew and vows to get him home.

Molly and Andrew begin an epic trip with the only goal of being home for Christmas dinner, but this journey from hell may have these friends admitting more to each other than ever before.

This is one of those holiday rom/coms that leave you with all the warm and fuzzies. Molly and Andrew are opposites and yet perfect together. She is a pessimist and over worked lawyer who hates her job, while he is easygoing and a family and event photographer. The two of them together have a believable relationship with a dialogue that is snappy and snarky. There is one sex scene, but it is short and not gratuitous. I love how the author has the two in the present day interspersed with flashbacks of their previous nine flights. All the family members of both Molly and Andrew are well developed and add to the fun holiday family feel. This story had me rooting for Molly and Andrew all the way on their terrible, but wonderful journey.

I highly recommend this enchanting holiday rom/com!

Book Description

When the murder weapon is revealed as one of the wooden stakes used to identify trees on the farm, Sheriff Evan Grey turns to Holly’s father, Bud, and the Reindeer Games staff. And it doesn’t help that Bud and the reindeer keeper were each seen arguing with Margaret just before her death. But Holly knows her father and is determined to exonerate him.

My Book Review

RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars

TWELVE SLAYS OF CHRISTMAS (Christmas Tree Farm Mystery Book #1) by Jacqueline Frost is the first book in a cozy small-town mystery series all set during the holiday season. They bring all the happy holiday feels along with a cozy murder mystery to solve in Mistletoe, Maine.

This first book introduces the reader to Holly White and her cat, Cindy Lou Who, on their return home to the family Christmas tree farm after a broken engagement. Home is just what she needed to help heal her broken heart and reunite her with family, friends, and the Reindeer Games holiday tradition on the farm. Everything is going well until Holly discovers Margaret Fenwick, the head of the local historical society bludgeoned to death with a Christmas tree stake and left dead in the sleigh display.

When Sheriff Evan Grey shuts down the farm and games, Holly is determined to find the killer, exonerate her father and farm staff, and get the games going again. There are plenty of people through the years who have had problems with Margaret, but with Holly asking questions about the murder, Holly is now the target of a killer who wants to remain hidden. Will Holly ask one too many questions of the wrong person, even as Sheriff Grey warns her to stop, and become the killer’s next victim?

This is a wonderful holiday cozy mystery that has everything to pull me into the story curled up on my couch on a cold winter night. The author’s writing is descriptive and engaging. I felt like I was in Mistletoe participating in all the games, and all the characters were my friends. Holly is a great protagonist who is both inquisitive and strong willed with a warm and loving heart. The mystery plot is well paced throughout the story with plenty of suspects, red herrings, and a few surprises. I am looking forward to reading more of the books in this series and following all the characters that now feel like family.

I highly recommend this cozy holiday small-town mystery and I am looking forward to reading more in this series!

My Book Review

RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars

A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE IN THE LITTLE IRISH VILLAGE (The Little Irish Village Book #3) by Michelle Vernal is an emotional rollercoaster addition to The Little Irish Village series. This story features the youngest twin, Ava Kelly, but still involves the entire loving Kelly family and their small-town of Emerald Bay, Ireland during the Christmas season. While this women’s fiction/small-town romance can be read as a standalone, I feel they are better read in order as each sister finds her forever love and the relationships within the family and village continue to evolve.

Ava and her twin, Grace, head to London to work and live for the excitement of the big city and to travel while they are young and free. After a year, Ava believes she has made a terrible mistake. She is unhappy and lonely and regrets leaving Emerald Bay and her ex-boyfriend, Shane. She is torn between her twin and her love.

Before Ava can sit down with Grace to tell her how she feels and that she wants to leave, she gets a phone call from her mother telling her Shane has been swept off his family’s fishing boat during a storm. Ava rushes home and prays for a miracle and as she waits for news, Grace still believes nothing will change. Will Ava get her future with Shane and be able to make Grace understand her true feelings for her future?

I loved this return to the Kelly family and Emerald Bay. There are two parts to this story that both revolve around Ava, and both had my emotions all over the place. I cannot say a lot about the plot points because it would give too much away, but I can tell you to keep the tissues handy. This heartwarming story is full of family, love, hope, reconciliation, and second chances.

I highly recommend this joyful and heartwarming women’s fiction/romance and cannot wait for the next book in the series!

My Book Review

RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars

THE WEDDING DRESS CHRISTMAS (The Wedding Collection Book #3.5) by Rachel Hauk is a heartwarming small town holiday romance novella. This story is a part of The Wedding Collection series which features a special magical wedding dress and while only novella length it packs an emotional punch. (Have the tissues ready.)

It is Christmas time in Hearts Bend, Tennessee.

JoJo Castle returned to the safety of her parents’ home after a horrific personal attack while working in Dallas. Her dreams of adventure and life in the big city are gone. While she is happy working with her cousin in The Wedding Shop and helping with projects around town, she has no interest in love or marriage for herself.

Buck Matthews left Hearts Bend with a dream of country music stardom. His dreams have come true, but he comes home for the holidays when he receives news of his mother’s illness. While his career is at its height, being home reminds him of the things that are missing from his life.

JoJo and Buck were close friends in high school, but life moved them in different directions. With opposing life goals and JoJo’s ever-present fear, can the magical wedding dress and the man in a purple shirt help these two realize a special holiday miracle?

For a quick novella read, this story has well developed characters, an emotional punch and a holiday HEA. Even though JoJo and Buck’s romance moves quickly, it is believable because of their previous friendship and the realistic adult discussion of feelings throughout. There are no sex scenes in this novella. The religious elements in this story are hinted at Christian values and not preachy.  I normally do not give novellas more than a 4-star rating, but this one deserves all 5. I am glad I gave it a try and now I want to go back and read the full-length novels in this series.

I highly recommend this beautiful holiday romance novella!

Feature Post and Book Review: The Christmas Cottage by Jane Porter

Book Description

She’s ready for a charming Christmas in the English countryside…

It’s almost Christmas and Ella Roberts is ecstatic to be heading to Bakewell to spend the holidays with her sister and brother-in-law, the new Earl and Countess Sherbourne, and represent her family at the English wedding reception. Ella is looking forward to visiting the Sherbourne estate, exploring Bakewell, and experiencing a proper English Christmas. She just has two requests—that she stays in one of the historic cottages at Langley Park, and that the annoying best man not be invited to the reception.

Baird MacLauren was happy to serve as the best man to his closest friend from Trinity College’s wedding. The long weekend spent in the San Juan Islands celebrating his best friend was easy, but getting along with the bride’s mischievous sister who takes nothing seriously was an unexpected challenge. Baird thought he’d never have to see her again…until he spots Ella in Bakewell preparing for the reception.

To Ella’s dismay, her second request isn’t honored and now she’ll be spending Christmas with the most arrogant—and handsome—of Scottish men. Can they both keep their distance or will the magic of the season bring these two together?

My Book Review

RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars

THE CHRISTMAS COTTAGE (Love at Langley Park Book #2) by Jane Porter is the perfect holiday contemporary romance that will warm your heart as you curl up on your favorite chair on a cold holiday night. It can be easily read as a standalone as it is a complete HEA, but many of the characters are from the first book and I am glad I read them in order.

Ella Roberts is on holiday from her job teaching and working on her PhD and is excited to be traveling to Sherbourne estate in England to be spending the holidays with her sister and brother-in-law. When she arrives, she finds her sister on bedrest and pregnant and the historic cottage on the estate she wanted to stay in is being occupied by the annoying best man from her sister’s wedding.

Baird MacLauren has come to Sherbourne as a favor to his best friend from Eton to help with the holiday festivities until he can get there himself. When he sees the beautiful and memorable sister-in-law, he is once again feeling an intense attraction that he refuses to give in to. When she is assigned to the same cottage, they both refuse to leave and now he must spend his holiday with the infuriating American he cannot seem to keep out of his thoughts.

With an attraction that sparks, will they keep their distance for the holidays, or will the magic of the season bring them together?

I was so happy to read this romance and completely satisfied in the end. I enjoyed the first book, Once Upon a Christmas, and was excited to see what came next. This story also has realistic characters and believable situations that pull you right in. Ella is an intelligent and feisty heroine who is a wonderful foil to the jaded attorney Baird has become. The dialogue is witty and smart. There is only one sex scene towards the end of the story, and it is very sexy, but not overly explicit. It is enjoyable to also catch up with all the occupants of Sherbourne estate and their lives. This romance has everything I look for in my HEAs and I have found this to be true with all of Jane Porter’s wonderful romances.

I highly recommend this holiday contemporary romance, the entire series, and this author.

Book Review: The Book Club Hotel by Sarah Morgan

RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars

THE BOOK CLUB HOTEL: A Christmas Novel by Sarah Morgan is a wonderful holiday women’s fiction/romance that is the perfect story to give everyone warm and fuzzy happy holiday feelings. This is a standalone story with memorable characters, and it is an easy, fast read that I did not want to end.

The Maple Sugar Inn is a picture-perfect historic Vermont inn that is especially magical around the Christmas holiday season. Widowed single mom, Hattie Coleman is the harried owner and is just trying to hang-on through the fully booked holidays.

Erica, Claudia, and Anna have been best friends since college and keep an annual week out of their busy lives to get together for their book club vacation at various hotels all over the country. This time Erica picked the Maple Sugar Inn and did not tell her friends why she decided on this particular inn. All three ladies are at critical points in their lives as they are turning forty and will need the support, they have always found in each other and they just may be able to help Hattie out with her problems, too.

I loved all the women in this story. They are all fully developed characters and while they individually lead completely different lives, they are the best of friends who will do anything for each other and the fact that they are brought together by books each year makes me love them even more. I also enjoyed Hattie’s sweet romance as she finally allows herself to love again. Hattie’s daughter, Delphi, was a delight and an engaging bridge between her mother and newfound aunt. A very agreeable HEA ending that is perfect for reading over the holiday season.

I highly recommend this feel-good story that is the perfect holiday women’s fiction/romance read.
