My Book Review

RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars

DOUBLE STAKES: A European Thriller (Melisende Thriller Book #3) by Alison Morton is another intricately plotted and fast-paced international law enforcement procedural thriller featuring Melisende des Pittones and her partner, Jeff McCracken, both now working for the European Investigation and Regulation Service out of Brussels. While the international crimes plotline can be read as a standalone thriller, I have read the series in order and have enjoyed the main characters’ personal and professional evolution over the three books.

Melisende and Jeff are taking a well-deserved break after their last assignment at her family’s chateau in France, when her mother is almost barley missed by a deadly projectile with an attached note through the garden room’s glass roof. The family discovers that it was a message for Melisende’s sister-in-law who is deeply in debt due to gambling.

While Melisende wishes to stay at home and help her family, she and Jeff are assigned to a kidnapping of the possible next chancellor of Germany. The kidnappers want the election thrown, which would lead to a hard right-wing politician becoming chancellor. As Melisende and Jeff work to uncover the kidnappers, they discover the continuation of some of the old rifts between West and East German politics that still exist.

There appears to be a disturbing link between this case and the problems that her sister-in-law is involved in back in France. Can Melisende and Jeff work fast enough to stop the rigging of a national election and save her loved ones?

This is a fantastic international thriller series with fully developed main characters and crime plotlines full of danger, intrigue, twists and surprises that keep me turning the pages. The international political landscape is realistic and frightening as well as the criminals in this story. Melisende is once again at the top of her game and with Jeff by her side, they are unstoppable. I love with Melisende being French and Jeff being English how they balance each other very well even with very different backgrounds. The secondary characters are interesting and well written for their roles. I am looking forward to seeing how Melisende’s family recovers from their trials in this story.

I highly recommend this exciting international thriller!

My Book Review

RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars

DOUBLE PURSUIT (Melisende Thrillers Book #2) by Alison Morton is the second book in this fast-paced international procedural thriller featuring Melisende des Pittones of the newly formed European Investigation and Regulation Service (EIRS). This book can be read as a standalone, but to catch up on how the whole team came together you will want to read the first book in the series, Double Identity.

Melisende “Mel” des Pittones along with her fellow operatives have discovered that the arms they have recovered are only the tip of an international crime syndicate. Step by step the team’s investigation is frustrated by ruthless thugs who are able to stay one step ahead while also severely injuring two of Mel’s fellow operatives, one of which is Jeff McCracken with whom Mel is currently in a relationship.

Mel is finding all clues are leading back to the African Sahel, where she was once betrayed and nearly killed by a fellow soldier. Now she must return once and for all to destroy the criminal network started by a traitor and try to save a colleague’s life.

I was so excited to learn that Double Identity was not a standalone, but the start of an action-packed international thriller series that features one of my current favorite kick-butt action heroines. Mel is such a strong character, with a half French half English upper class heritage, military special intelligence analyst and special forces training in the French Army and now attached to the EIRS in Brussels. With agents from all over the EU and England the operatives all have special talents. With each book, the characters all are all evolving and becoming more fully fleshed. The complex plot is nonstop investigation, action, and advanced military weapons and spy gadgets, but it also remains in the realm of believability in today’s fight against terrorism. I could not stop turning the pages.

I highly recommend this new Melisende Thriller and am looking forward to more adventures in the future!

My Book Review

RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars

DOUBLE IDENTITY by Alison Morton is a completely engaging, fast-paced thriller that grabbed me from page one. This is a new to me author with an amazing new heroine who is a former French Intelligence Analyst Special Forces soldier with dual French and English citizenship.

Melisende “Mel” des Pittones has retired from the French Army to get married to Gerard Rohlbert who is a financial trader. As the story begins, they are in England and Mel wakes up with a clouded mind and a dead fiance next to her in bed. Even with her years of service in the army, Mel is accused of the murder and Met Police DI Jeff McCracken is determined to find proof of her guilt.

Mel and McCracken end up working together in a new EU investigative service to find out the truth about her fiance’s murder. Everyone seems to be hiding secrets and Mel is not sure who she can trust. Will she be able to uncover the killer before she becomes the next victim?

This is one of those perfect thrillers that you just cannot put down and you keep turning the pages until you get to the end. Mel is a wonderful new protagonist who is as intelligent and tough as any of the male protagonists out there in other thriller series. Her international background adds to my interest in her and makes the plot even more believable as she chases answers all over Europe. McCracken is an interesting character who goes from believing Mel is guilty of murder, to just being obnoxious, to actually being a viable believable partner for her.

I highly recommend this new international thriller heroine and this fast-paced read!
