Book Description

CHRISTMAS:
The silly season.
Or, the suicide season?

A string of suicides on the island arouses Detective Liam O’Reilly’s suspicions. He understands that the suicide rate tends to increase during the festive season, but the ways in which these people have chosen to end their lives doesn’t feel right.

As O’Reilly and his team dig deeper they soon learn there is much more to these apparent suicides than they initially thought and O’Reilly realises there is a seriously damaged mind on the loose.

Dubbed the suicide killer by the press, this madman will stop at nothing to get his depraved message across and O’Reilly is the only one who can put an end to his killing spree.

This festive season is one the Irish detective will never forget.

My Book Review

RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars

CHRISTMAS ON THE ISLAND (DI Liam O’Reilly Mysteries Book #6) by Stewart Giles is another exciting police procedural/crime mystery featuring the crusty DI Liam O’Reilly on the Channel Island of Guernsey set during the Christmas holiday. The crime mystery in each book is unique, but these books are best read in order due to the ever-evolving main characters.

A string of suicides occur on the island right before Christmas, but when O’Reilly arrives on each scene there is something that just feels off. As O’Reilly and his team investigate, the coroner and Crime scene techs make it clear that they are looking for a killer.

Dubbed the suicide killer by the island press, O’Reilly searches for a connection between the victims which does not appear to exist until a young journalist and his twin sister seem like the perfect suspects.

Will O’Reilly and his team be able to stop the killer or killers before Christmas day?

I love the O’Reilly mysteries series! O’Reilly is a determined DI who will investigate every little piece of evidence until they all click together in his mind to solve the case. Having read all the books in this series, O’Reilly, his team at the police station, his daughter and his girlfriend have all become friends I look forward to revisiting in each book. The crime mystery plots are always intriguing with lots of red herrings and plot twists that always lead me to false conclusions. Mr. Giles is very good at twisting a mystery plot to completely change the outcome while still being believable.

I highly recommend this addition to the series!

Author Bio

After reading English at 3 Universities and graduating from none of them, I set off travelling around the world with my wife, Ann, finally settling in South Africa, where we still live.

In 2014 Ann dropped a rather large speaker on my head and I came up with the idea for a detective series. DS Jason Smith was born. Smith, the first in the series was finished a few months later.

3 years and 8 DS Smith books later, Joffe Books wondered if I would be interested in working with them. As a self-published author, I agreed. However, we decided on a new series – the DC Harriet Taylor: Cornwall series.

The Beekeeper was published and soon hit the number one spot in Australia. The second in the series, The Perfect Murder did just as well.

I continued to self-publish the Smith series and Unworthy hit the shelves in 2018 with amazing results.  I therefore made the decision to self-publish The Backpacker which is book 3 in the Detective Harriet Taylor series which was published in July 2018.

After The Backpacker I had an idea for a totally new start to a series – a collaboration between the Smith and Harriet thrillers and The Enigma was born. It brought together the broody, enigmatic Jason Smith and the more level-headed Harriet Taylor.

The Miranda trilogy is something totally different. A psychological thriller trilogy. It is a real departure from anything else I’ve written before.

The Detective Jason Smith series continues to grow with book 16 recently published. The first 5 books in the Detective Liam O’Reilly series are now available.

My Book Review

RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars

REVENGE ON THE ISLAND: A Compelling Mystery with a Dark Twist (DI Liam O’Reilly Mysteries Book #5) by Stewart Giles is an exciting and edge-of-your-seat addition to this series that I was unable to put down! Even though this is the fifth book in the series, it is easily read as a standalone.

DI Liam “Smiley” O’Reilly thought he was getting away from the high stress crimes of Dublin when he moved to the smaller force on Guernsey Island. It has not quite worked out that way, and now he is about to face a depraved serial killer from his past.

When the hunter becomes the hunted and has run out of options, Smiley is left with contacting the one man from his past he has vowed to never contact again.

You are going to want to set aside the time to read this mystery/thriller in one sitting. I did. This story is a perfect balance of action, surprise twists and strong characters. I love Smiley, his daughter, Assumpta and his entire team; they are all interesting, fully developed characters that could walk right off the page. The mystery/thriller plot of this addition to the series is especially intense and chilling as it seemed impossible to prove Smiley was being framed and then the plot builds to an ending that is completely shocking!

I highly recommend this new Smiley book, the entire series and this author with his multiple entertaining and smart series.

‘BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR.’

These seemingly innocent song lyrics are about to send Detective Jason Smith over the edge.

Still traumatised after a harrowing trip back home, Smith is sent headlong into the stuff of nightmares when he returns to work. When a woman is found dead with her spinal cord severed Smith and his team are thrown into the most disturbing investigation ever.

Then another body is found and when Smith realizes what this woman was subjected to he knows he’s on the trail of the most sadistic killer he’s ever come across.

All clues point to a death metal band.

Wishbone are in town for a few shows and when Smith realizes all the murders bear striking similarities to their song lyrics he starts to wonder if there is something more to this band than meets the eye.

This is the most horrifying case of Smith’s career and one the people of York will never forget.

My Book Review

RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars

WISHBONE (A DS Jason Smith Thriller Book #15) by Stuart Giles is the latest thriller/British police procedural with DS Jason Smith and his family back in York from their trip to Australia and trying to return to normal. Five-year-old Laura is still traumatized, DC Erica Whitton is not yet ready to return to work, but Jason cannot stand another minute of leave. All the books in this series can be read as standalones, but I know you will want to read many more.

DS Jason Smith is on the hunt for a sadist killer. He comes back to work with his team and is called to the scene of a woman found in her bedroom with her spine severed in two places. Then a second mutilated body is found. As Jason is at the new murder scene, he is called back to the station to hear a story from two members of a death metal band called Wishbone. At first, it does not seem connected to his present case.

Then a USB is anonymously left for Smith at the police station which seems to connect the sadistic murders to the disturbing lyrics of Wishbone’s songs. Smith and his team work to uncover the clues to lead them to a sadist killer who could be a fan, roadie or even a member of the band.

I read through this DS Jason Smith thriller at warp speed! I was glad that Mr. Giles exposed Laura’s continuing problems which are from her time in “Australia” and did not just gloss over the realistic expected trauma. Smith is his usual workaholic self, and this case throws some very gruesome crime scenes his way. The violence in this book is graphic and not for the faint of heart, but it does not feel exploitive due to the subject matter. This story, like all the other DS Jason Smith thrillers, is fast paced, well plotted and gives a thoroughly satisfying conclusion.

I highly recommend this new thriller in the series and the entire DS Jason Smith series!

My Book Review

RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars

AUSTRALIA (A DS Jason Smith Thriller Book #14) by Stewart Giles is the latest DS Jason Smith crime thriller. It is an intense race against the clock, edge-of-your-seat emotional thrill ride from start to finish. Even though this is the fourteenth outing for Smith, this book is easily read as a standalone.

DS Jason Smith, his wife, DC Erica Whitton and their five-year-old daughter, Laura are ready to take a vacation from the dreary York February weather. Erica wins a three-week vacation to Australia, but Smith is not happy about returning to his hometown.

When they arrive, they find there are reports of several missing children and some have turned up dead. While at the beach, Erica is stabbed and nearly killed while Laura has disappeared. Smith discovers that not only have the police little to go on, but there seems to be obstruction from above in the local police force hindering any true investigation.

DS Bridge comes to Australia to cover Smith’s back and help recover his daughter. Will Smith and Bridge be able to uncover who has been abducting the missing children and save Laura before she becomes a victim, too?

WOW! This is my first DS Jason Smith thriller and it will not be my last. The plot is a fast-paced, step-by-step emotional punch to the gut. Smith has to stay unemotional and work the crime all while being obstructed by the local chief of police, deal with his wife almost being killed and his daughter being abducted and not knowing if she is dead or alive. The killers are truly evil and terrifying.

I highly recommend this crime thriller! I could not put it down. I felt an immediate connection with the characters and I believe there will be a Jason Smith thrillers reading marathon coming soon.
