ARC Feature Post and Book Review: The Phantom by Bob Drury and Tom Clavin

Book Description

Major Pierre “Pete” Ortiz was a Manhattan-born and Paris-educated polymath fluent in five languages. An adventuresome French Foreign Legion veteran specifically recruited by “Wild” Bill Donovan’s Office of Strategic Services (the precursor to both the CIA and U.S. Special Forces) upon his enlistment in the Marines, Ortiz was the officer “Wild Bill” instinctively knew he needed and could rely on to complete a string of clandestine missions.

While recuperating from gunshot wounds received during a behind-the-lines excursion into enemy-held North Africa, Ortiz delivered his After-Action Report directly to Donovan in Washington. After reading it, “Wild Bill” scrawled across the top of the report: “Please re-employ this man as soon as possible.” Ortiz’s handlers heeded Donovan’s request. Within a year Ortiz was surreptitiously parachuted into the Haute Savoie region of Occupied France, where he made contact with the resistance fighters who called themselves Maquisards.

By the time he retired as a United States Marine Corps colonel, he received two Navy Crosses for extraordinary heroism in World War II. He was one of the very few U.S. Marines to serve in combat in Europe during World War II, and one of the most decorated Marine officers of the war.

My Book Review

RATING: 4 out of 5 Stars

THE PHANTOM: The Untold Story of the American Marine the Nazis Could Not Kill by Bob Drury and Tom Clavin is the biography of U.S. Marine Major Pierre “Pete” Ortiz who was nicknamed “Das Fantom” by the Gestapo during WWII. What an amazing, daring, and patriotic man I knew nothing about.

A multi-lingual adventurer who served eight years in the French Foreign Legion in Northern Africa, was a merchant marine seaman, a lion tamer, a riding instructor, and the chauffer to a bootlegger all before serving in the Marines and the fledgling OSS in WWII. Twice Ortiz parachuted into Nazi held France, once before and once after D-Day to equip and train French resistance groups.

This biography gave me so much new information. While I have read about “Wild Bill” and the beginning of American covert operations previously, I did not realize how many Marines were the backbone of the on-the-ground behind-the-lines operations. I found Ortiz’s life fascinating and very well documented throughout this biography, but I was also hoping for more. There is a good portion of the story spent on the set-up of the OSS and “Wild Bill” Donovan that while interesting, it is not why I picked up this book. While Ortiz’s life is told here, I wanted more focus on him, alone as the title infers.

Overall, a book that gives a good overview of the beginnings of the OSS and espionage during WWII while introducing the reader to an astonishing man of action.

ARC Feature Post and Book Review: A Rainy Night in Georgia by J. Tom Morgan with John Capouya

Book Description

In December 2000, Derwin Brown, the newly elected sheriff of DeKalb County, Georgia, was ambushed and murdered in his own driveway just days before taking office. He had run on reform—promising to clean up corruption and restore integrity to the sheriff’s department—defeating the powerful incumbent in a bitter runoff.

The case fell to J.Tom Morgan, then the county’s elected District Attorney. Working alongside local, state, and federal law enforcement, Morgan pursued the case through months of dead ends, mounting pressure, and intense public scrutiny. It became a national media sensation, combining political intrigue with revelations of government corruption, murder-for-hire plots, and a never-before-tried legal strategy in the Georgia criminal justice system. Then the case became personal: Morgan learned that his own name was next on the killer’s hit list.

In A Rainy Night in Georgia, Morgan gives readers something almost no one else can—a first-person account of power, danger, and integrity from inside the justice system. What began as a baffling, unsolved murder evolved into one of the most extraordinary political assassination cases in modern American history after a shocking discovery.

My Book Review

RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars

A RAINY NIGHT IN GEORGIA by J. Tom Morgan with John Capouya is an engrossing true crime book told in the first person by the then District Attorney of Dekalb County Georgia, J. Tom Morgan who was tasked with bringing the murderers of Sheriff-elect Derwin Brown to justice and proving the corruption in the current Sheriff’s office. This book is written with an excellent balance between personal observations and emotions, investigative facts and deals, and courtroom strategy and drama.

In December 2000, the newly elected sheriff, Derwin Brown, was gunned down in his home driveway. Derwin Brown had run on cleaning up the corruption in the sheriff’s office and accused his successor in public. A corruption investigation had already begun six months previously, but Derwin Brown’s murder brought every alphabet agency into the investigation.

District Attorney J. Tom Morgan worked with local, state, and federal agencies, and while the corruption investigation moved along, the murder investigation hit dead ends at every turn until J. Tom was forced to make a controversial deal and learns his name was next on the hit list.

I love true crime, so I followed this case on the national news, but I lost track of it due to 9/11. While I heard about the verdict later, this book brought me back to that time and filled in all the facts and added the personal views and emotions of J. Tom Morgan. The writing brings this story to life once again with the clear and concise step-by-step retelling of the murder, investigation, and trial. It is a sadly often repeated story that shows how absolute power corrupts and, in this case, results in a senseless murder that results from that corruption.

I highly recommend this captivating true crime book!

My Book Review

RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars

THE GRAPEVINE (The Lost Highway Book #1) by Alexandra Sokoloff and Craig Robertson is a tension-filled thriller featuring a mother who will go anywhere and do anything to find her missing daughter. This is a collaboration between two authors I have enjoyed reading individually, so of course I was excited when I was asked to read this book.

Lou Gomersall’s daughter, Abby, is missing without any clues. Leaving her husband at home, she takes the family RV and begins scouring the highways and byways of California. She collects any mention of other missing young women and uses the network of other people on the road living the van life, campground operators, and even prostitutes at truck stops to search for connections. Even when the police are skeptical and tell her to stay out of the cases she has found and go home, she continues. She refuses to believe her daughter is dead, no matter how crazy she seems or acts.

Lou is on a mission to save Abby and kill the man who took her.

Lou is such a memorable protagonist. You have empathy for her, you feel sorrow for her, you cheer her on even when she seems or acts crazy, and you keep hoping with each revelation she discovers the truth of what happened to all the missing girls, not just Abby. All the secondary characters are believable, and I was glad she had Ethan in the second half of the book to help her search for clues and try to keep her more grounded in reality. The plot pace continuously builds as more pieces of the puzzle of the missing young women cases are revealed. The ending chapters kept me on a rollercoaster of emotions and left me completely shocked and not expecting the revelation at the climax of the crime plot and I love it when that happens. I am not sure what these authors and this series will have instore in the future, but you can definitely count me in.

I highly recommend this emotionally charged, edge-of-your-seat crime thriller!

My Book Review

RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars

HAVE A BEAR-Y LITTLE CHRISTMAS by Roxie Ray is a beautiful paranormal romance story featuring a grizzly bear shifter widowed father of two young girls and a single human mom of a young son who has entered remission from cancer. The holiday season theme is prevalent as the time of the first meeting and then renewed over the two-year span of the story. This is a standalone Christmas holiday romance with all the adult relationship emotional ups and downs and three young characters who are all enchanting.

Jeannie Wolfe is a single mom with a young son in cancer remission. Their financial situation is difficult, but Jeannie is determined to give Max as normal as possible Christmas now that he is home.

Remington LeBeau has been widowed for eighteen months and even though he and his two young daughters had been waiting for their mother’s death from a genetic disease, it has taken time to adjust to their new normal. He has tried to make the transition as easy on his girls as possible and only focused on them.

Jeannie and Remington both decide to take their children to a free community skate. When one of Remington’s girls is injured, Max comes to the rescue. The three children instantly form a bond which leads to Remington and Jeannie spending more time together. Jeannie is reluctant, with her past overshadowing her present and Remington is not sure if he is ready for another romance, besides his bear-y secret, but the children are determined to become one happy family.

I really loved this paranormal romance. It did not follow the usual path but really dug into complex feelings that both Jeannie and Remington are dealing with and the children had issues of their own which were integrated beautifully into the story. The shifter revelation in the story was a new and pleasant take on the discovery for me. This book is not an easy holiday romance, but it really pulls you into hard, realistic relationship issues in an empathetic way. The love of family is the guiding light of this story with fully developed characters that shine.

I highly recommend this holiday paranormal shifter romance!
