My Book Review

PRIVATE I by Ashlei E. Watson, Jill Fain Lehman & Paul Pangaro is a futuristic sci-fi thriller and murder mystery with a bit of romance featuring a young woman on the run after the murder of her grandfather, but that is the simplistic overview. It also involves many philosophical questions tied to an advanced Machine Intelligence (MI) named Marlowe that her grandfather invented and gave to her as a friend and guide at a young age when she came to live with him.

Ready to leave the rules and strictures of her grandfather’s home, Paloma has graduated and is hoping to attend MIT in the next session. When she comes home after visiting the college, she finds her grandfather murdered and their home on fire. Paloma’s MI, Marlowe, has instructions for an occurrence like this, but Paloma would rather be on the run with Marlowe than destroy her friend of fifteen years. As she tries to figure out who wants the technology enough to kill, Paloma seeks help from some of her grandfather’s friends, but even they seem to have ulterior motives. She does not know who to trust.

Paloma is an interesting protagonist. She is young and seems to have led a sheltered life with Marlowe, but she is also tough and intelligent enough to weave her way through the treachery and lies of the people supposedly trying to help. The dialogue between Paloma and Marlowe was at times entertaining, but it also did a great job of demonstrating Paloma’s complex relationship with a machine that sometimes left her feeling as if she was losing her individual human self. There is some technological discussion and a lot of acronyms that at times I did not understand, but you can skip or not understand the jargon and the main plotline will still pull you in and keep you turning the pages. There is a good mix of action and amateur investigation along with philosophical discussions of humans relying on personal machine intelligence that kept me pondering even after the resolution of the book. The ending was not what I was expecting, but it still satisfied.

I recommend this mash-up sci-fi thriller. It was different for me, and I enjoyed it.

Dominic “Duke” Marston is a P.I. with a 10-year-old precocious daughter, Melanie “Mellie” who arrives in Benton, Colorado chasing a lead on a case. Estelle “Essa” is the head cook in the hotel, but she has dreams of crime fiction publication. This novella gave me problems from the beginning. There is an age gap between the H/h which did not bother me, but it was Duke’s attitude throughout that I did not like. For me, he was not hero material until almost the end of the novella which was too late. This romance did not work for me, but I loved Mellie.

THE MOST WONDERFUL RANCHER OF THE YEAR – Kate Pearce

It’s sour meets sweet when a former rancher battling more than one private demon meets a woman who lights up his heart, and proves to him that anything—even love—is possible.

This novella is an addition to the Three Cowboys trilogy from Ms. Pearce, but it can be read as a standalone. Bernie needs help with her wedding and asks her cousin, Pen to be her wedding planner. Pen’s ADD sometimes limits her, but she is great with customers at her other jobs and the constant shift in needs for the wedding seem to be right up her alley. Rob works for Bernie and works on Luke’s ranch. He has been afraid to follow his heart with Pen due to his past, but between the two of them, they discover they just might be perfect together. This is a wonderful novella with plenty of love, understanding, and forgiveness. It was also fun to catch up with the characters I loved in the full-length trilogy.

Now as the two work together, the chemistry is still there, but can it last and will they find Happy Harry to solve her case?

Overall:

I was looking forward to some contemporary cowboy romances centered around the Christmas holiday, but all the heroes have other professions and only one is actually working on a ranch part-time. Overall, these novellas deliver a mixed bag of satisfaction, one I did not like and two that gave me satisfying HEAs from these authors that I usually always love.

My Book Review

THE FIRST LADIES by Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray is a biographical historical fiction novel of a beautiful and significant friendship between a First Lady of the United States, Eleanor Roosevelt and the First Lady of the Struggle, Mary McLeod Bethune. The story spans two decades with the Depression, World War II, Jim Crow laws, lynching, and the continual fight for social equality with these two strong women fighting together for change.

While I felt knowledgeable about this period and Eleanor Roosevelt’s work for social improvements for all, I did not know about Mary McLeod Bethune’s contributions. The story of their friendship is told in alternating chapters. Mary is older, a Lincoln Republican and has been fighting for education for Negroes and equality her entire life when she meets Eleanor (who is not a First Lady at the time). They strike up an unlikely friendship that endures triumphs and tragedies, both personal and political.

I loved the new historical facts and people I learned of while reading this story. For me, research and facts in a historical story are important and I always hope to learn something new. The candid conversations between the two highlighted common misunderstandings between the races, racial discrimination, and segregation. As the two grew closer, I enjoyed the scenes where they would work around the system, problem, or President to get the solution they wanted. While this is an engaging story of historical friendship, it also delves into the politics of the times to a great degree. I love politics, both past and present, but for some who are hoping for a book only about the two women’s friendship, they may not enjoy it as much as I did.

This is a book of a loving friendship, but it also delves into the darkness of racial hate, lynching, and segregation. The disrespect of humans for just the color of their skin was ever present in this period of American history (not that it isn’t today), but Eleanor was the First Lady and with her power and the help of her friend Mary, she continuously and publicly fought to change society.

I highly recommend this powerful biographical historical fiction about two amazing First Ladies!

My Mini Book Review

RATING: 4 out of 5 Stars

HOLMES, MARPLE & POE: The Greatest Crime-Solving Team of the Twenty-First Century by James Patterson and Brian Sitts is a fast-paced P.I. mystery and suspense/thriller that I had to try as soon as I saw the title and I am glad I did. The three P.I.’s in this book are not only named after their famous predecessors, but also have many of the same traits, good and/or bad, as their namesakes. I really am hoping this book becomes a series.

Brendan Holmes, Margaret Marple and Auguste Poe suddenly appear in New York City and open one of the most sought-after Private Investigation firms in the city. The only thing is law enforcement can find no trace of any of the trio’s pasts which I loved. They are obviously close and understand each other, but you never learn how they came to be a team.

The chapters are the usual Patterson style of short and fast, but I still did not want to put the book down until I finished. There are several cases to solve threaded throughout the story, rather than one main mystery. While this helped show each of the main characters strengths, I also feel that I did not get an in-depth case to solve that would have engaged me even more, but hopefully that will happen if this becomes a series. I also like all the secondary characters and the animals they acquired along the way.

I really enjoyed Holmes, Marple & Poe and look forward to more adventures.

My Mini Book Review

RATING: 4 out of 5 Stars

THE CASTLE KEEPERS by Aimie K. Runyan, J’nell Ciesielski, and Rachel McMillan is an enchanting novella anthology of historical romances featuring three generations of Alnwick heirs and is set at the “cursed” Leedswick castle in rugged Northumberland England.

Each novella, besides the historical romance plot, had an interesting hook that made them more than just a romance. The first set in 1870, The Truth Keepers, set up the premise of the “curse” that runs through all three novellas. It also had a heroine that was a “Dollar Princess” and a mystery plot involving the castle’s Poison Garden. In the 1917 setting, The Memory Keepers, the heroine is an artist who paints masks for disfigured Tommies returning from WWI. The last novella set in 1945, The Dream Keepers, has a heroine with psychological training who works with the returned heir to help soldiers covalence in the rural castle setting and offers psychological analysis. Wars and the “Curse” have affected each Alnwick heir, and each will find a love that may be what they need to heal, learn to love, and break the curse.

I really enjoyed each novella in this anthology. The authors were able to pull me right into each romance and time period with well developed characters and interesting and varied heroines and plots.

I recommend this enjoyable historical romance anthology.

CHRISTMAS, ACTUALLY (Christmas Town, Maine series) by Anna Adams, Melinda Curtis, and Anna J. Stewart is a trio of sweet holiday romance novellas featuring three siblings living in Christmas Town, Maine. This Christmas may be the one where they will finally meet the person they want to kiss beneath the mistletoe in the gazebo and fulfill the local legend.

The Banning siblings have all grown up in Christmas Town, but they all have led very different lives.

In the first novella, The Christmas Gift by Anna Adams, Dr. Jack Banning has come home to work as a trauma surgeon in the local hospital after years of service in Afghanistan. Since he has been home, he has buried himself in his work rather than deal with his memories. Sophie Palmer is on her way to Bangor to try to reconnect with her mother and work in a less stressful job than the ER since she is going to be a single mom. After she is hit by on oncoming car, her reflexes kick in and she saves the other driver’s life until Jack and the hospital’s Life Flight arrive. Jack is instantly attracted to Sophie and recognizes her PTSD symptoms. Will Sophie be able to share with Jack and take a chance on an instant attraction or will Jack’s own reticence to share keep them apart.

The second novella, The Christmas Wish by Anna J. Stewart, has Callie Banning trying to fill everyone’s expectations and requests for help over the Christmas season, since her mother is away. Callie is a second-grade teacher and has duties of her own, but she just cannot say “no”. When Callie calls in single father, Dean Galloway about his daughter Eliza’s problems with all things Christmas, she wants to help get to the reason rather than punish her. Dean is a free-lance photographer who is constantly on the move with Eliza in their RV home since his wife’s death three years ago. They have their work cut out for them because Eliza no longer believes in Christmas wishes.

In the third novella, The Christmas Date by Melinda Curtis, Nick Banning is a divorced father of one young son and the town handyman. He has never felt as accomplished as his siblings who all have college degrees, but he has a dream of getting his contractor’s license and restoring historic homes. He has had a crush on Gina Vernay, the owner of The Tea Pot since they were young. Gina had an accident that left a scar on her face and has eroded her confidence around people. When Nick discovers Gina has gone on a dating website, he replies, and they share things they haven’t in person. Nick is learning that people believe in him more than he does himself and he wants Gina to realize she is more than her scar that he just considers a part of her. Nick and Gina have the same dreams if they are willing to rely on each other and bravely face the future together.

I enjoyed this trio of novellas so much! I do not normally give novellas five stars, but these three stories have beautifully fully drawn characters and realistic scenarios all leading to heartfelt HEAs. They are the perfect sweet quick reads to get you in the mood for holiday romance.
