Book Blurb

Tom Novak is back.

When a spate of deadly terrorist attacks hit the streets of London, Tom finds himself thrust into the middle of a fight for the survival of all he holds dear.

When the attackers hit closer to home than he could ever imagine, Tom is forced to make a choice between his duty or his conscience. In doing so, he enters a series of increasingly dangerous worlds, in the darkest corners of humanity.

Can Tom and his colleagues get to the bottom of a plot which threatens the very fabric of society?

Will they stop the terrorists before it’s too late?

When faced with the ultimate choice, which way will Tom go?

After all, as Cameron always says: “Always do right, boy…”

Going Rogue is the follow-up to the hugely successful thriller, Going Dark: the book that introduced Tom Novak as the hero who, in the words of best-selling author Tony Parsons, “makes Jason Bourne look like a vegan Pilates teacher”.

Get Going Rogue today, and start a rollercoaster ride of a thriller that you won’t ever want to put down.

My Book Review

RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars

GOING ROGUE (A Tom Novak Thriller Book #2) by Neil Lancaster is the latest thriller featuring Tom Novak. This book can be easily read as a standalone, but there is some character overlap and it adds to your enjoyment when you read both. I read them both in order and fell in love with this protagonist and author!

Tom Novak was a child refugee, a Royal Marine and an undercover member of an elite army force. He was raised with a strong moral compass and sense of justice. He is highly skilled physically and mentally. After his exploits in Going Dark, he is now a member of the Covert Policing Advice Unit known as “the team”. They specialize in undercover work to disrupt those with power in the military, judiciary and/or civil service who use their positions corruptly.

This story starts with a domestic terrorist attack in London. A mosque is targeted on the Eid to maximize deaths and destruction.

DS Tom Novak is briefed that the bomber was captured and refused to talk, but he did turn over a prepared statement. He is an ex-British soldier living on disability and claims to be a member of the Aryan Defense Force. He states that the group will not stop until all Muslims are expelled from Britain.

As Tom and the team begin to investigate, they find there is missing Semtex and their best option to finding it is to get someone into prison with the bomber. Tom has to move into darker and more dangerous territory for answers. Will Tom and the team be able to stop these terrorists before it is too late?

I am so excited to have another fabulous protagonist and thriller series to follow. Mr. Lancaster had me at book one, Going Dark and now in book two, Going Rogue, I have added this series to my must reads list. Tom Novak, all his team members and his colleagues add up to a great cast of characters. Mr. Lancaster has written a fast-paced thriller that builds in intensity and tension throughout.

I highly recommend this thrill ride!

My Book Review

RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars

The Art of Murder (Jordan Jenner Mysteries Book #2) by J.S. Strange is the second cozy P.I. mystery featuring Jordan Jenner. The mysteries are set in and around Cardiff, Wales with a gay male protagonist which makes this series unique and the author’s writing style makes it an intriguing mystery read.

Jordan’s brother, Ashley has shown up unexpectedly from his home in Australia and tells Jordan he is in trouble, but he will not reveal what is the problem.

P.I. Jordan Jenner is hired by artist Xander Draper. He has been receiving threats from a group called The Dirty Dollys. They are an anonymous group that disrupt showings, blackmail and threaten new artists that they feel have been artificially pushed into stardom using illegal means.

Xander’s dead body is displayed in one of his last exhibits.

Jordan and his brother are being threatened and followed. Is it for the paintings Xander gave them before he was murdered? Did the Dirty Dollys kill Xander or are there other enemies that Jordan needs to find. And what secrets is Ashley hiding?

Jordan has several suspects, but will he be able to solve this case before they come for him?

I really enjoyed this second mystery in this series. Jordan became more fully fleshed and vulnerable in this book. We see him start to let people in and try to consciously change his isolation. (I am still cheering for Lloyd.) The mystery was well paced and kept me guessing. All the information about illegal money and publicity tied to the rise of an art world star was interesting and kept me engrossed in the story.

I recommend this book, series and author! I hope I will be able to follow Jordan on many more adventures in the future.

Author Bio

J.S. Strange is an author from Wales, United Kingdom. He writes crime, mystery and horror. His first novels, published in 2016 and 2017, were set in an apocalyptic London. Murder on the Rocks, is the first in a cozy crime mystery series, featuring a leading gay male detective.

Murder on the Rocks was written by Strange for many reasons. One of those reasons was a lack of representation within the crime genre, particularly with detectives and sleuths. Strange created Jordan Jenner, a private investigator, who lives and works in Cardiff. Murder on the Rocks was written with the intention of shining light on Cardiff, and bringing Cardiff, and furthermore, Wales, into the crime genre.

Strange’s previous works, such as ‘Winter Smith: London Burning’, also explored LGBT themes, and featured socialite Winter Smith escaping a zombie apocalypse. ‘London’s Burning’ became an Amazon best-seller in LGBT fiction.

When Strange doesn’t write, he works in television. He also presents a radio show all about the paranormal. He has an enthusiasm for Britney Spears and cats.

Twenty years ago, Emily Mills’ father was murdered, and she found his body hanging in the backyard. Her younger sister, Madison, claims she was asleep in her room. Her older sister, Tara, claims she was out with friends. The tragedy drove their mother to suicide and Tara to leave town forever. The killer was caught. The case closed.

Ever since, Emily and Madison have tried to forget what happened that night – until an eerily similar murder brings it all back. It also brings FBI special agent Zander Wells to the Oregon logging town. As eager as he is to solve the brutal double slaying, he is just as intrigued with the mystery of Emily’s and her sisters’ past.

When more blood is shed, Zander suspects there’s a secret buried in this town that no one wants unearthed. Is it something Emily and Madison don’t know? Or aren’t telling? And Tara? Maybe Emily can’t bear to find her. Because when Tara disappeared, she took a secret of her own with her.

My Book Review

RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars

THE LAST SISTER (Columbia River Book #1) by Kendra Elliot is the first book in a new romantic suspense/FBI mystery series. This book is easily read as a standalone, but a few of the characters are carry overs from Ms. Elliot’s Callahan & McLane series.

Twenty years ago, a family was shattered when the father was found hanging from a tree and their home burned to the ground. The mother committed suicide a week later, the eldest daughter disappeared and that left two small girls with secrets that they would hide for years.

Present day. FBI Special Agents Zander Wells and Ava Callahan are sent to investigate a double murder in a small Oregon coastal town that is eerily similar to a twenty-year-old crime that was supposedly solved. The tip came from Emily Mills who found the slain couple and was one of the sisters who survived the old crime. Zander is determined to solve this double homicide, but he is also intrigued by the old case and Emily.

As Zander and Ava investigate, the killer threatens Emily and her relatives and then strikes again to hide his crimes past and present. Secrets long buried need to be revealed for the past and present cases to be solved before someone else is killed.

I was completely engrossed in all the plot threads in this suspense. Past and present, multigenerational secrets. I like that Ms. Elliot shows the insidious, not in-your-face racism that can infect and destroy multi-generations and towns. Zander and Emily each deserve to find happiness and I feel they were perfect for each other. There is no sex in this story and Zander and Emily are very attracted to each other, but Zander waits until the case is solved.

I highly recommend this book and I cannot wait for more book in this series. There is intriguing investigation, secrets revealed, and the start of a romance that had me turning the pages continually from beginning to “The End”.

Book Tour/Feature Post and Book Review: Death of a Young Lieutenant by B.R. Stateham

Hi, everyone!

Today I am excited to be posting my Feature Post and Book Review on the Book Tour for B.R. Stateham’s WWI historical mystery DEATH OF A YOUNG LIEUTENANT.

Below you will find a book blurb, my book review and the author’s bio. This book has a charismatic main character, a mystery plot that keeps you guessing and it is set in France at the beginning of WWI and the dawn of aviation warfare. Enjoy!

The problem is both the evidence and the painting are behind enemy lines.

How do you prove a man’s innocence and steal a masterpiece while an entire German army is breathing down your neck?

***

My Book Review:

RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars

Death of a Young Lieutenant by B.R. Stateham is a WWI historical mystery that is distinctive in period, setting and protagonist, entertaining and an engrossing mystery read from start to finish.

Jake Reynolds is an American who loves to fly the new aeroplanes. He volunteers to become a pilot in the newly formed British Royal Flying Corps. Captain Reynolds is handsome, charismatic, an adventurer, a talented artist and master thief.

The son of a client, a young lieutenant in Jake’s squadron is found unconscious holding a smoking gun by the dead body of a sergeant in their unit. When Jake is asked to prove the lieutenant’s innocence, he is more than willing to assist even though he must travel behind enemy lines because he also has his eyes on a van Eck three panel masterpiece of the Madonna and Child behind those lines.

Can Jake find proof of the lieutenant’s innocence even as the killer strikes again? And will Jake be able to beat the German army to the van Eck?

This is such a wonderful historical mystery. The main character is charismatic and I so hope this is just the beginning of his adventures. The WWI European setting and the birth of aviation in war are a unique backdrop. Mr. Stateham’s mystery plot kept me guessing until the end and it entwines with the art theft subplot effortlessly. Everything works for a great read.

I highly recommend this mystery!

***

Author Bio:

B.R. Stateham is a fourteen-year-old boy trapped in a seventy-year-old body.  But his enthusiasm and boyish delight in anything mysterious and/or unknown continue.

Writing novels, especially detectives, is just the avenue of escape which keeps the author’s mind sharp and inquisitive.  He’s published a ton of short stories in online magazines like Crooked, Darkest Before the Dawn, Abandoned Towers, Pulp Metal Magazine, Suspense Magazine, Spinetingler Magazine, Near to The Knuckle, A Twist of Noir, Angie’s Diary, Power Burn Flash, and Eastern Standard Crime.  He writes both detective/mysteries, as well as science-fiction and fantasy.

In 2008 the first book in the series featuring homicide detectives Turner Hahn and Frank Morales came out, called Murderous Passions.

Also, in 2008 he self-published a fantasy novel entitled, Roland of the High Crags: Evil Arises.

In 2009 he created a character named Smitty.  So far twenty-eight short stories and two novellas have been written about this dark eyed, unusually complex hit man.

In 2012 Untreed Reads published book two of the Turner Hahn/Frank Morales series A Taste of Old Revenge.

In 2015 NumberThirteen Press published a Smitty novella entitled, A Killing Kiss.

In 2017 a British indie publisher, Endeavour Media, re-issued A Taste of Old Revenge, and soon followed by a second Turner Hahn/Frank Morales novel entitled, There Are No Innocents.

In 2018 Endeavour Media published a third novel of mine, the first in a 1st Century Roman detective series, entitled While the Emperor Slept.

Also in 2018, NumberThirteen Press merged with another famous British indie, Fahrenheit Press. Soon afterwards, Fahrenheit Press re-issued an old novel of mine entitled, Death of a Young Lieutenant.

Now, after all of this apparent success, you would think Fame and Fortune would have sailed into my harbor, making me the delight of the hard-core genre world. Ah but contraire, mon ami! Fame and Fortune are two devious little wraths who pick and chooses the poor souls they wish to bedevil. I remain in complete anonymity and am just as bereft of fortune as I have always been. And apparently will continue to be for a long time to come.

They say choice not chance determines human destiny, but on foreign shores not everyone is what they seem and choices can be ill informed.

Mentally and physically exhausted after her last case, Cat McKenzie heads to the sunny shores of Southern Cyprus. When a fellow guest, an American business man, suddenly dies, Cat’s instincts scream foul play. Unable to step out of her skin as a detective, she can’t help but start to dig.

Drawn into a dark world inhabited by arsonists, bird-trappers and a cold-hearted killer, Cat is soon playing a dangerous game; one that has tragic consequences.

To get closer to the truth, Cat must get closer to the killer and allow the killer to get closer to her. But surrounded by strangers, each appearing to be as respectable as the other, she first needs to figure out which of them are feather and which of them are claw.

***

My Book Review

RATING: 4 out of 5 Stars

FEATHER AND CLAW (DC Cat McKenzie Mystery #2) by Susan Handley is the second book in this series and it can easily be read as a standalone. The first in the series is your classic British police procedural, while this book is written as a mystery with Cat on vacation. She has no jurisdiction, but she can’t leave the case alone.

DC Cat McKenzie is on vacation on an island of Cypress with her friend Amy. She is supposed to be relaxing, but they witness the death of an American guest at their resort. At first it is thought to be a case of hypoglycemia leading to the gentleman’s death, but something does not feel right to Cat and being Cat, she cannot let it go. It may look like a natural death, but Cat believes it was murder.

As Cat learns more about the other guests and searches for clues, she also learns about the illegal bird pickling trade and a serial arsonist. She may be out of her jurisdiction, but she will not stop until she finds the killer, but at what cost?

I enjoyed this straight mystery plot. Cat’s character is always inquisitive and pulling on any loose thread. She just does not know how to relax. The plot was well written and kept my interest with several twists and red herrings that kept me on my toes and guessing. I also enjoyed reading about the island sun, heat and sand during my current winter weather.

Overall, an enjoyable mystery read.

Author Bio

Susan Handley grew up in the Midlands and despite a love of literature, and crime fiction in particular, she never dreamt of being able to carve out a career as a published writer. But the desire to write never left her and after years of writing by night she has at last been able to share the results of her efforts.

Susan now lives in a small village in rural Kent with her husband and three cats. When she’s not indulging in her love of writing crime fiction she loves walking (the hillier the better), bike riding (the flatter the better) and tending her veggie patch.

Susan has published two novels. A Confusion of Crows is the first to feature DC Cat McKenzie, a one-time marine biologist turned detective. In the second in the series, Feather and Claw, the death of a fellow guest sees Cat put her holiday on hold and turn detective, only with no team to rely on and outside of her jurisdiction, she learns the hard way that trying to outwit a murderer is no game. A third Cat McKenzie mystery is due out in 2020.

Susan has also produced a collection of short stories, called Crime Bites Volume 1. Full of bite-size crime stories there’s bound to be something to suit all tastes. A second volume is due to be published later in 2019.

Feature Post and Book Review: A Prison In The Sun by Isobel Blackthorn

Hi, everyone!

I am sharing my Feature Post and Book Review today on the release of Isobel Blackthorn’s A PRISON IN THE SUN (Canary Islands Mysteries Book 3).

Below you will find a message from the author, a book blurb, my book review and the author’s bio and social media links. Enjoy!

***

A Message from the Author:

I wrote A Prison in the Sun to honour and remember all those men imprisoned under General Franco’s regime because they were gay. On Fuerteventura, where this story is set, prison conditions were brutal and likened to a concentration camp. To the best of my knowledge, nothing substantial about this prison has been written in English. All of my research I conducted in Spanish. In 2008 the story of the prison broke after professor Miguel Ángel Sosa Machín interviewed prison survivor, Octavia Garcia. I have known of the prison’s existence since 1989, when I lived in Lanzarote and my close friends from the island told me what went on there.

I have purposefully juxtaposed life in the prison with that of the present day, counterpointing the gravity of the prisoners’ situation with a touch of bathos in the main narrative, striving not only for balance, but also to entice reflection on who we were, who we are, and where we want to be.

A Prison in the Sun is my fourth Canary Islands’ novel and was written in keeping with that narrative style.

I offer the following story in all sincerity.

***

Book Blurb:

After millennial ghostwriter Trevor Moore rents an old farmhouse in Fuerteventura, he moves in to find his muse.

Instead, he discovers a rucksack filled with cash. Who does it belong to – and should he hand it in… or keep it?

Struggling to make up his mind, Trevor unravels the harrowing true story of a little-known concentration camp that incarcerated gay men in the 1950s and 60s.

***

My Book Review:

RATING: 4 out of 5 Stars

A PRISON IN THE SUN (Canary Islands Mysteries Book 3) by Isobel Blackthorn is a literary book with two mystery subplots; one past and one present featuring a millennial ghostwriter questioning his sexuality. This book is easily read as a standalone. I have not read the previous books and I believe the series is based more on the location than the characters.

Trevor Moore has made a decent living as a freelance ghostwriter, but after a difficult divorce two years ago he has been personally stagnant. He has lost his identity as a househusband and full-time father. Now his bi-sexual ex-wife is remarrying her girlfriend and he is struggling with his own sexuality.

Trevor decides to rent a farmhouse on Fuerteventura an island in the Canary Islands chain to work on his own novel. He is tired of producing for others and receiving no credit. The farmhouse is next door to a hostel that he learns was once a labor camp for gay men during the Franco regime. While it seems like an interesting bit of history to base a story on; it also seems too depressing.

On a trip into seaside caves, Trevor finds a backpack. No one on the beach claims it. When he gets it home and opens it, it is full of a large amount of cash and a packet of old handwritten pages. While he struggles with his conscious on whether to turn in the money or not, a body washes up on the beach a few days later. He also discovers the packet of pages is a personal account from a prisoner from the labor camp.

Can Trevor use the personal account to bring the story of the labor camp to life in his own words? And what of the dead body and the decision to be made about the backpack?

This was a very different type of book for me because it was more literary than genre mystery. The author intertwined the past and present mystery subplots equally throughout. Both were interesting and intriguing. There is a lot of emphasis on Trevor questioning his sexuality which I can understand with the tie into the labor camp, but I did not feel it was necessary as many times as it appeared throughout the book. The ending is abrupt and leaves you with many questions which was frustrating for this genre lover who wants everything tied up at the end, but it is what you would expect in a literary work.

This book is a bit out of my comfort zone, but it is well written and worth the read.
