Feature Post and Book Review: The Girl with the List by Shari J. Ryan

Book Description

Day in, day out, servant Rosalie is forced to aid in the harrowing medical selections at Auschwitz, marking prisoners as “fit” or “unfit” with trembling hands. She once thought “unfit” meant they’d get the help they needed. Now she knows the devastating truth: “Fit” means they live another day, “unfit” means they don’t…

Every day, her heart breaks further as she hopelessly scans the crowds for the face of the man she loves, torn from her a year ago simply for being Jewish. Praying that he’s still alive, Rosalie desperately tries to save as many other men as she can—risking everything by marking them as fit and hoping her act of rebellion isn’t noticed.

Then one icy morning, she looks up from her list into the stunning green eyes of the man in her line—the man her heart beats for. And now the real fight begins, as Rosalie risks her life to save Stefan’s again and again. But then one morning, Stefan isn’t there. Rosalie frantically searches for him, blood turning to ice. He’s gone. But how far will she go to find him? And can he stay alive without her until she does…?

My Book Review

RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars

THE GIRL WITH THE LIST by Shari J. Ryan is a heart wrenching, gripping, and emotional historical WWII fiction story featuring a young Polish midwife and a young Jewish man who fall in love before the Nazis come to their small Polish town and both ultimately end up in the Auschwitz concentration camp.

Rosalie witnessed the death of her mother, the town’s midwife, and sister while giving birth alone in their cottage at the age of eight. She was determined to make up for not helping her mother by becoming a midwife herself and saving everyone she could. She helps a Jewish family delivering their youngest and falls in love with their eldest son, Stefan. When the Nazis come and takeover Stefan’s family’s factory, Rosalie gets scooped up by a Nazi officer who has heard of the amazing midwife and needs her for his wife in their home on the Auschwitz concentration campgrounds.

Rosalie is forced to aid the Nazi officer not only in their home, but in the camp deciding the fate of the lined-up prisoners as fit or unfit for work. Fit prisoners were sent to the factories and farms, while the unfit were eliminated. For a healer this was soul-stealing, but she was determined to help as many as possible while always watching for the eyes of the man she loved.

One morning she looks up and her nightmare comes true. Many times, she must make decisions to try and save Stefan but is his new determination better or worse. All the while her employer knows of their connection and is determined to torture Rosalie as much as Stefan. When Stefan disappears, Rosalie is determined to find him no matter what the cost.

This book was so difficult to read at times, but I also could not put it down because I was so invested in Rosalie and Stefan. Knowing from history how many people died in the camps and especially those that the doctors experimented on, had me on the edge of my seat every time Stefan disappeared from Rosalie’s lists. Rosalie was not only treated poorly physically by her Nazi employers, but the officer psychologically torments her using her morality, ethics, and compassion for others against her. I loved the continual references to time that a human has on this earth, the preciousness of every hour and minute, and Rosalie and Stefan’s belief in their love being able to transcend time. Make sure the tissues are close while reading this book.

I highly recommend this story of love, resilience, and bravery during a horrific time and in a horrific place.

Book Description

Poland, 1943: ‘Please don’t do this!’ Her shrill cry pierces the night air, the screams breaking the silence of the falling snow. But the man she calls to does not turn, vanishing into the darkness with a child clasped in his arms…

Present day: Irena has waited a lifetime for this moment. At last, she has the chance to confront the man who has haunted her dreams for the last fifty years.

Despite the warmth of the day, a shiver runs down her spine as she stares at the house. Inside is the person she hasn’t seen since that terrible night in Poland, in the snow, all those years ago. Having spent so much of her life searching, soon she will face the man who broke her heart, leaving her with nothing but shattered pieces.

Moving towards the door, she takes a deep breath. This is her final chance to avenge what the Nazis did to those she loved during the war. But as she reaches a trembling hand towards the handle, her breath coming in shallow gasps, she suddenly stops.

She has imagined this moment for most of her life, but is she prepared for revenge to cost her everything? And even if she is, will she recover from the truth she is about to uncover?

This gripping and emotional wartime novel tells a moving story of courage, hope and the endurance of the human spirit, even in the darkness of the World War 2.

My Book Review

RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars

THE WINTER CHILD by Carly Schabowski is an emotionally intense WWII historical fiction told in dual timelines primarily by the main protagonist who is a young girl in 1940’s occupied Poland and then a grown woman seeking revenge in 1994 Argentina. While this book is difficult to read at times due to the inclusion of scenes of wartime rape and abuse, it is not gratuitous and necessary to the plot.

Poland 1940’s: Irena works in the local hotel in the kitchen to make money to help support her parents, but she is terrified of the Gestapo troops that have taken over the town. When one of the servers drops a plate on the head of the local Gestapo, Irena is forced to replace her. Richter makes her his personal server and more…

Irena has a child, but one winter night her baby is taken, and she vows to stop at nothing to get revenge.

Argentina 1994: Five decades later, after the death of her husband, Irena is searching for the man of her nightmares to finally fulfill her vow.

This is a story that had me on an emotional roller coaster. For the first time, the second portion of the title states “A heartbreaking and unputdownable World War 2 historical novel” was true. Irena is such a strong character that suffers so much loss and trauma during the war and yet it does not destroy her. There are some plot surprises that made this story and ending unique from other WWII historical fiction books I have read.

I highly recommend this WWII historical fiction.

My Book Review

RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars

THE KEEPER OF HIDDEN BOOKS by Madeline Martin is a tour de force historical fiction novel featuring a group of friends in Warsaw, Poland during WWII inspired by the true story of the public and underground libraries that continued throughout the war. This is a must read for all lovers of books who believe books have the power to uplift, nurture, embolden, and provide escape during the worst of times.

Zofia Nowak and Janina are inseparable best friends bound by the love of books. This novel follows their lives, their families’ lives, and friends during the Nazi occupation of Warsaw during WWII. It is a poignant look at the horrors perpetrated by the Nazi’s in the Warsaw Jewish ghetto and against the general Polish population in general. Hitler looked down on all Poles and wanted them eliminated or used as slave labor.

Zofia not only worked with Polish Resistance, but also worked in the library warehouse to save as many books and historical documents as possible from the Nazi book banning and burning. Janina and her family are Jewish and end up in the ghetto, but both continue to find ways to share books, remain friends and resist.

This story is beautiful and inspirational as well as so hard at times. There is a reason autocrats ban and burn books because the words and ideas are powerful. Books give hope, teach empathy, and spread ideas that can change hearts and minds. This book has an inspiring friendship at its center, mentions wonderful literary novels throughout, and reminds us to be ever vigilant of those who seek to ban and destroy books and history.

I highly recommend this marvelous historical fiction novel!
